Adultism Story

Adultism- a subject brought up in our class after we went to advocate for a cause and were accused of stealing- is a lot like sexism and racism: it affects people everyday, even if they don't realize it. Adultism hides in all kinds of situations, one being the simple act of babysitting. Whenever I babysit, I'm paid around $5, maybe $10, per hour. But when my much older sister babysits, she's paid double or more then double what I make. We have about the same amount of experience with young children, yet adults assume that because she's older she's more responsible and just an all around better babysitter. I think that is not fair at all: just because she was born in the 1980's opposed to the 1990's doesn't mean she should be rewarded more then me. I think if we all just took a step back and evaluated the everyday situations we're in, we would be surprised at the amount of adultism we endure.
